THE SOUTH HAS RISEN AGAIN!!

The Confederacy
written by 4Bars

Over the past 10 years, the hottest rappers, by far, have been from the south. The most original sounds (Outkast, Timbaland, Neptunes, etc), the most ingenious musical ideas (Whisper Song, T-Paining ur voice, Dance/Hit Song Combo) and honestly, the best hip hop music has come from either Texas, Atlanta, Louisiana, or Florida. Not saying that the north (read: New York) hasn’t had their share of good music: Nas, Hov, Joe Budden, Kiss, 50 sold some records, etc, but New York has been lackluster when it comes to hip hop. There are two phrases that have been resounding in my head over and over while writing this post: “The South will rise again!!” and “Hip Hop is Dead”. I now see that the latter statement was made out of jealousy and envy; or maybe it was only referring to New York, cause as Lil Wayne and T.I. have made a point of maintaining, Hip-Hop is alive and living quite well.

Hip-Hop started in New York and no one can ever take that away from the Big Apple, but a lot of things have originated there, left, and evolved once out of the confines of the concrete jungle. Whether it’s G-Unit falling flat, Dipset in turmoil, or Hov holding on to New York’s claim by his fingertips, what’s now clear is that people wanna enjoy what they listen to. You can talk about Soulja Boy being stupid, but there is a huge demographic of people that want to and like to hear his songs. Don’t get that confused with “purchase” his songs, cause while they do that too, that’s not what I’m getting at. People are tired of the thug image, even down south, and NY has been doin it for a loooong time.

Hip hop has made its new home in the south. And it’s not some fad or changing trend, we’ve had those (reggaeton, reggae, Hyphy movement) in past summers and they’ve been short lived. But the longevity that artists like T.I., Ludacris, Lil Wayne, Outkast, and Scarface (to name a few) have had and the huge success that artists like T-Pain, Rick Ross, and Soulja Boy are having makes it clear that hip hop is here to stay in the south. New York rappers’ continued quest for the crown has made it a hostile Hip-Hop environment and the focus is no longer on the music. Hip-Hop is art, not a competition. There are clear competitive aspects, even from the beginning, but without the art, it’s meaningless. What’s the solution? Who knows, but the way Kanye, Common, Lupe, and the kids (Cool and In the Hall) are doing it, the south may have to share the spotlight, but the question is when (if ever) will New York reclaim its share?

You know Bars, my first reaction is to write some disparaging comment about you, disagree with your entire post then write one about why NY is still on top.

But I'm going to try really hard to be objective... You're right. The epicenter of today's Hip-Hop music/industry is not in New York. It is somewhere below that Mason-Dixon line.

And yes, it has been like that for a long time.

And yes, too many NY artists don't adapt creatively and instead bitch and moan thus taking away from the art.

And yes, the times have changed.

Happy?

Having said that, NY isn't being heard because they perpetuate the thug image because everyone still does that. Ross, Plies, Jeezy, TI, Wayne... s**t just about everyone who's ever been on a Khaled posse track talks about their guns, drugs or body count so that's not it.

The "hip-hop is dead" phrase was not coined because people were hating. Everyone who's ever written for PTM (yes, you too bars) have talked about how the quality of hip-hop has fallen. that's what Nas was getting at. He wasn't dissin Lil' Wayne and TI just the fact that too many songs really do suck.

But right now, many artists in the South are creating a brand of music that has a mass appeal and that is why they are on top. I guess more people want to snap and joc more than nod their head and wait for the next killer punchline.

So yes, Bars. You guys are dominating. People are looking down before they are looking up for the next best thing.

Happy now?

O NO U DIDN'T!!!! lol
ART? ART? OK there are a few "ARTIST"? And yes the south has the most RADIO play/ club love right now. But lets not get too excited by the lower half of this country and get too gassed and confuse "HOT"= right now.... and think this is a compliment....

Out of all the names u just listed, with out saying OUTKAST, Luda and WAYNE who else on that list really says some profound $hit? SOULJA BOY...? LIL JON,? YEAH!!!!!????

NO!!!!!!

Im just saying lets not get ahead of ourselves...
Yes the south is "DOING it up" RIGHT NOW....
BUT DON'T GET GASSED...
its all love though

I will say this... Thanks for giving us a classic "Bars" post. It's been a few weeks since we've had one of these.

Even Weezy wants to be from New York. Hello Brooklyn...

I seem to remember this happening a few years ago when the block was hot, bling bling was shiny, and asses were being backed up and then someone else made em say UGHHH. Its like some sort of strange cycle.

1)i stated that when i say the "north" new york is the only place that matters, who the f is spittin out of Connecticut? Boston? I guess you could mention Philly

2)nodding heads and killer punch lines are what's lacking, who's spitting in NY, besides the usual suspects? Hov, Nas, Kiss, Talib, etc

3)Ross and Plies should NEVER be mentioned in the same breath as Wayne or T.I., two TOTALLY different classes of artists, Plies wont make it to album 3, Ross is on his last leg...

4)Hot is referring to short period of time (1 summer, maybe) Kast, Luda, T.I., Wayne, Face, any of the Dungeon Fam, UGK, etc have been doin it f'n BIG for AT LEAST the past 10 years, since f'n hov vol 3. so stop it with the flash in the pan talk. Lil Jon is not a rapper, he's a producer who raps some, and he's an incredible artist, along with Jazzy Pha, Pharrel, Toomp, Timbo, etc

5)will somebody please just take the L for NY please and just admit that NY better step the F up if they plan on remaining relevant past Nas, Hov, Kiss and Black Star.

Joell Ortiz is spitting

Mickey Factz is spitting

Busta is spitting

theres more but just add those names to the names you mentioned and that is a good amount of people in New York "spitting"and then compare that with the amount of rappers in the "south" spitting

and as far as you going down the producer line them dudes know what it is.

I know Chicago is midwest but I would compare Kanye, Common, Lupes flow to a NY style than anything. So since you compare the "south coast" to NY just throw them in there.

bars i know you can argue that the color black is not black so im done

joell ortiz + mickey facts = 1 album.
killer mike, pastor troy, david banner, cee lo, z-ro, trae, chamillionaire, little brother, are the dudes in the south spittin, the thing all the people i just named have in common, they all have AT LEAST 2 albums under their belts, good ones, that dudes up north, in general, give NO LOVE to, as is proven by the fact that you know all of these people but implied that they arent spittin by naming 3 cats in NY spitting and asking me to "compare". Thats a huge part of my point, NY has hated for so long that people have stopped caring and said fuck it, i'm gonna do my thing for those who are listening and now you got dudes from NY not really gettin love like they should cause of so much built up animosity. and f#$k yo couch also

A.B.

i never told you to compare you didnt read what i said and i didnt sit here and list all the rapper in ny that can spit on purpose. the same thing goes down south theres music up north that that south doesnt give love thats hot. cee lo doesnt exist anymore his name is gnarls, zro chill, trae i dont know, chamill still riding dirty, david banner just finish argueing on BET bout the stuff in videos then dropped his next single "get like me, stuntin is a habit", killer mike has one album/mixtape in the past 5 years.

you did more comparing than anything, i dont have a problem with the south i enjoy playing their records. i just call it how i see it. you cant just say ny hates hates hates, you aint been in ny long enough to say that. the south gets love in ny, majority of the dudes come up to ny to work on their albums.

hahahahahahahah

this is awesome!!!!

Anonymous Bars vs. Anonymous Wiz

lol.

I won't join in this conversation but I will bring out a post to address this "misunderstanding".

but for the record. Joell Ortiz would rap circles around everyone you mentioned Bars except Phonte.

Pastor Troy and Z-Ro? Are you serious? Please tell me you are not serious.

Oh and the Dungeon Family has not been rocking it for the past 10 years. Other than Outkast and Gnarls who else is still relevant and don't dare say Gipp. lmao.

Good point Wiz, I've always considered Chicago more East coast than anything else. Who the f**k made it "mid-west". It's closer to NY than it is to any part of the West Coast.

F**k see you dragged me into this argument Bars... Damn you!

This is fun though.
